Earlier today I read a great post by @TomMartin on Facebook taking on Twitter when the real battle should be with LinkedIn. Ever since I’ve been focused on what it would take to make me leave LinkedIn and focus all attention on Facebook – here’s what Facebook will need to do:

Enhanced privacy controls – Facebook already allows groups and privacy controls by group but right now the status update can’t be protected. I use Facebook only for personal friends and wouldn’t want work or professional contacts to see those updates. Hell, several of my friends don’t want those updates! I use Twitter for my professional networking and most of my friends don’t care about the latest marketing link or new fad site. I need the ability to send status updates to one group and not another.

Answers – The answers feature on LinkedIn is powerful and a great way to leverage your network. I think it leverages their FOAF feature. I don’t know of any similar Facebook feature?

Groups – I am a member of several groups on Facebook but none have the richness I find from LinkedIn’s groups. I’m not sure if this is really a feature change or if it’s just about usage?

Googlejuice – My public profile on LinkedIn gets a first page placement on Google’s homepage. Facebook is also on the first page but I don’t have the same modular control of what information I put into Google. I want that control – let me decide what part of my Facebook profile shows up in Google search results

Will these changes make me switch? Maybe not but I would consider it.

Today is #followfriday on Twitter and since I haven’t posted since last week I thought I’d ease back in with another list of people I follow. This week I’m writing about “business”. All this really means is that I’ve sorted these people’s blogs into my business folder on Google Reader. Here’s my list:

Today is #followfriday on Twitter and since I haven’t posted since last week I thought I’d ease back in with another list of people I follow. This week I’m writing about “business”. All this really means is that I’ve sorted these people’s blogs into my business folder on Google Reader. Here’s my list:

Rex Hammock – Rex owns a custom publishing business and writes about the intersection of the print and digital world. He is also a great chronicler of other Rex’s on the internet.

Dave Winer – Dave is the creator of RSS, p odcasting?, the OPML editor and many other neat thing. Dave is a successful businessman but I love him because he’s a digital tinkerer and uses Twitter and his blog to show us what he’s playing with.

Jason Calacanis – Jason is a serial entrepreneur and a great provocateur. He founded Weblogs Inc. and now focuses his time on his people-powered search engine Mahalo. This week he’s offering $250K for a spot on Twitter’s 100 suggested users.

Fred Wilson – Fred is a venture capitalist at Union Square Ventures. His blog A VC is always though provoking and boasts a vibrant community of commenters. Fred funds many of the companies whose technologies I use and that alone makes his voice unique. Sadly, Fred also gives me the heads up on cool new bands!

Russell Beattie – Russell’s blog is an old favorite of mine. He is a smart digital businessman and what makes me really jealous is that he tends to hack together prototypes of his own thinking.

Let me know who else I should be following?
